Nichelle Nichols was upset about how that scene in Star Trek VI played out. She told the writers she felt Uhura should know at least basic Klingon and she was shot down.
Not sure how I feel about Uhura being Hoshi Sato on steroids when it comes to languages, but I certainly like that better than, “We am thy freighter Ursva.”
